Faux-Knit Ribbed Earflap HatBeginner Friendly Edition | Designed by Stitchora Crochet | US Terms
This is a warm, cozy winter hat with braided ties. The pattern is crocheted flat using a special slip stitch technique in the back loops only to create a stretchy, ribbed, faux-knit texture. It is worked in repeating wedges and seamed at the back. The "earflap" functionality is a clever styling trick: by attaching braided ties to opposite sides of the straight brim, the flexible faux-knit fabric is comfortably pulled down over the ears when tied! The hat is finished with a decorative scalloped edging along the brim. Beginner-Friendly

Notes
Double Strands: The entire hat is crocheted holding two strands of yarn together. How to hdc sl st: Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch, pull up a loop, and pull that same first loop directly through the remaining two loops on the hook. BLO Technique: From Row 2 onwards, all stitches are worked into the back loop only. This creates the ribbed, faux-knit texture.
SIZING: THE FINISHED HAT HAS A CIRCUMFERENCE OF APPROXIMATELY 57CM. THE PATTERN IS CONSTRUCTED IN REPEATING WEDGES (10 ROWS PER WEDGE). • FOR AN AVERAGE ADULT: REPEAT THE 10-ROW SEQUENCE 7 TIMES. • FOR CHILDREN: REPEAT THE 10-ROW SEQUENCE 6 TIMES. • FOR A LARGE ADULT: REPEAT THE 10-ROW SEQUENCE 8 TIMES. Color Changes: If making a multi-color hat, change your yarn color at the end of the wedge (Row 10). Work the final stitch of the wedge until two loops remain on your hook. Drop the old color, yarn over with the new color, and pull through to complete the stitch. Ch 1 with the new color, turn, and work Row 1 of the next wedge. Anchoring Slip Stitches: When stepping down to work into the unworked chains of the foundation row (Rows 3, 5, 7, and 9), anchor your slip stitches by working them slightly into the side/base of the previous row to step down seamlessly and prevent gaps at the short-row turn points.
